JBF (INDIA) TRUST commonly known as JBF (Just Be Friendly) is a professionally managed not-for-profit social sector organization promoting the welfare of animals since its inception in 2003 and it aims to build a society that enables better life for animals and creates better living conditions with humans.
Introduction:
On March 13, 2024, JBF (Just Be Friendly) conducted a successful vaccination drive for goats and an awareness campaign at Kamakhya Temple. The event aimed to protect goats from Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and raise awareness about One health, animal welfare & rabies. Dr. Sashanka Sekhar Dutta, the Founder & Managing Trustee of JBF, led a team with the help of management of Kamakhya Devalaya to ensure the success of the initiative.
These goats were released by devotees on the temple premises, not for slaughter. They will live there until death. Some will die naturally, while others may succumb to disease, and the many will become food for the leopards residing in the nearby hilltop forest. Therefore, the purpose of the vaccine and treatment is to minimize the pain and suffering of the goats.
Vaccination Drive:
Dr. Sashanka Sekhar Dutta and his team administered PPR vaccines to 75 goats during the drive. This step aimed to prevent the spread of the disease and safeguard the health of the goat. In addition to PPR vaccination, JBF’s team provided treatment for various diseases to many goats.
Awareness Campaign:
Following the vaccination drive, JBF’s team members conducted an awareness campaign on One health, animal welfare & rabies. They distributed leaflets among the devotees at the Kamakhya Temple, did one to one interaction and displayed placards. The campaign aimed to educate the people about the importance of One health concept, animal welfare and rabies prevention & control.
One Health Approach:
The awareness campaign highlighted the concept of the unique One Health approach. The team emphasized the need to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. By promoting the One Health approach, JBF aimed to create awareness about the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, and the importance of addressing health issues holistically.
Conclusion:
The vaccination drive and awareness campaign conducted by JBF at Kamakhya Temple on March 13, 2024, proved to be a significant effort in promoting animal health and public awareness. With the vaccination of 75 goats against Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and awareness creating tools, JBF’s team made a positive impact on the health and well-being of both animals and the people. The inclusion of the One Health approach emphasized the organization’s commitment to addressing health challenges comprehensively.
