JBF receives many cases of pets being abandoned by their owners. Some do not get enough food, some pets are kept outside the premises even in unbearable heat or rain, and some pets are left inside the house chained while the owners are not available around. These types of cases are an eye opener for us to understand that not only the stray dogs but even pets are also suffering. Some buy a dog for matching up their status symbol or to keep it as an entertaining factor for their kids. The moment the dog grows old, either it is abandoned by the owners. This sad reality made us think about the situation the abandoned dogs go through. Therefore JBF is coming out with a campaign called ‘Responsible pet keepers’.  By this we want to aware all the pet keepers to love their pet even when they grow old.

Recently we get one case of pet abandon in Zoo Tiniali, Guwahati. There were 5 dogs in the premises with no water or food from 3 days as the owner left them in the house without providing any food. The dogs were suffering from immense hunger and their physical condition was going down. One of the dog lovers informed JBF, the dog was brought to our centre by where it was treated. Two of the dogs are now residing in different location while the three others are still in their old house. The owner’s mother was informed about the condition of the dogs but she was least bother about them. After the pressure by activities and JBF they came to their residence in Zoo tiniali to feed the dogs. But the adequate care of the pets is the question here. How can we trust those owners again with the dogs? People need to understand the requirements of another living being as well. They are your pets not slaves. The condition of the pets was so pathetic that it made us start this campaign for pet dogs also.

First of all, we should eliminate the word ‘ownership’ from our dictionary. There is no owner of a pet, if you have a pet at home then you are the ‘keeper’ of that pet and not owner. When we say owner a sense of dominance comes along with that. But a keeper is a person whose duty is to take care of the pet. Therefore, never call yourself as an owner of a dog or cat rather say keeper of your pet who is responsible for its medical, proper accommodation, food and mental care.

Secondly, immediately stand for the right of the pet if you see any humiliating act near your area. Don’t ignore if you see any pet getting tortured. Pets are living things as well. We cannot ignore the fact that like us they also have some basic needs. If the keeper is not being able to provide those needs, s/he should not take the responsibility of a living being in the first hand.

Be a proud Responsible pet keeper with JBF. Share your tips, photos with your loved pet, stories, videos with us and we will post it in our website/facebook page. Help us to make this campaign a grand success.
