We guess everyone heard the news of a dog which created nuisance in Jorhat Medical College. The dog bites the people in the college. This incident not only shows the ignorance of the authorities in Jorhat but also depicts the unsafe environment we are creating for ourselves by neglecting the fact that Animal Birth Control & Anti Rabies Vaccination (ABC-ARV) is important for us.

JBF had its centre in Jorhat also but due to the ignorance by the municipal and the Veterinary department there, the centre is closed from the last year. We often get request from people to open a centre in their area. We would also like to reach out every corner of Assam because people are still not aware of the importance of Animal Birth Control & Animal Rabies Vaccination (ABC & ARV) but how is it possible to reach out every corner without any support from the local authorities? We don’t get any financial support from the local municipals; two fine examples are the due payment of GMC from past 2 years & political issues created by JMB which leads to the close down of the centre in Jorhat.

Maybe this incident could have been avoided if there was JBF centre which provides Animal Birth Control & Anti Rabies Vaccinations. What JBF demands is the support from the local bodies as it will be difficult for JBF to set up a new centre and survive in a new area without the support from the local authorities. But sadly, we don’t get the kind of support we expect from them. This kind of egoistic gestures by those who owns power bound us to expand our work.

Also, people don’t take the street animals seriously but blame them after they harm the environment. Obviously everyone must be cursing the dog for biting the people around and creating annoyance even the dog was killed brutally by the local cops but nobody will try to understand the problem from its root. Dog gets irritated due to several infections/situations caused to them. How would you feel if your skin is itchy and irritating all the time? You will be annoyed but you have the option to speak your pain to a doctor. These stray dogs suffer from several infections yet can’t talk about it.

It is sad that people choose their ego over the safety. It is sadder when those people have the responsibility of other people as well. It is said that there are still many dogs in the city creating problems for the people, we cannot let the police kill all of them as they need help not murder. JBF is upset with the Jorhat Medical College news; we still have the time to save others before it’s too late. Hope our authorities will rise beyond their ego and politics.
